1What is a general pediatrician?
A Pediatrician is a doctor who treat and follow all kinds of problems of child growth and
development as well as all the difficulties that children face from birth to late teens. Pediatricians
can also give referrals for consultations with the pediatric specialties (Pediatric Neonatology,
Pediatric Pneumology, Pediatric Hematology, Infectious Pediatrics, etc.) as needed.
2What is included in the annual checkup for children?
Annual wellness check-up typically includes a physical exam, assessment of growth,
developmental, behavioral, and learning, immunizations, vision and hearing tests, and any other
health screening that are recommended based on your child's age and medical history. The doctor
may also discuss any concerns you have about your child's health and provide advice on
nutrition.
3Which Immunizations are recommended for children at which age?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in America recommend that all babies
receive a series of immunizations to protect them from a variety of diseases as follows:
- 2 months - DTaP, Hib, IPV, PCV, Rotavirus
- 4 months - DTaP, Hib, IPV, PCV, Rotavirus
- 6 months - DTaP, Hib, IPV, PCV, Rotavirus, HepB 12-15 months - MMR, Varicella, HepA
- 18 months - DTaP
- 4-6 years - DTaP, IPV, MMR, Varicella
- 11-12 years - Tdap, Meningococcal
- 13-18 years - Tdap booster, HPV, Meningococcal, Influenza
4Are there any side effects?
Any immunization can cause side effects however most children don’t have any. Side effects that
do occur are usually very mild, and may include:
- Fever
- Soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given
- Temporary pain and stiffness in the joints (mostly in teens and adults)
- Mild rash
